På listen over land med flest nettbrukere, har USA lenge regjert. Helt frem til så tidlig som på slutten av fjoråret, lå Kina, med sine 210 millioner, bak med hele fem millioner. Nå har de allikevel innhentet dem - og passert dem - med sine 221 millioner nettbrukere.
Grunnen til økningen er uvisst, men det kan vise seg å ha noe å gjøre med kinesernes forsøk på å demonstrere mot eller for OL-fakkelen. En annen faktor er at Kina, som er kjent for å sensurere mye på nettet, kanskje har slakket litt på grepet når det gjelder sensureringen.
Tross et kontinuerlig voksende internettsamfunn, var den totale, globale andelen nettbrukere lavere enn normalt. På slutten av 2007 var andelen på 16 % - noe som er en liten nedtur når den normale andelen er på 19,1 %.
